A good functional analyst doesn't need to be a programmer but must understand what an application does and how it fits within business processes. Working on a project involving accounting software? Then having prior knowledge in that domain is a major asset.
In addition, it’s crucial that this person acts as a bridge between IT and business. They must be able to translate technical concepts into language that non-technical stakeholders can understand—and clearly and concretely convey business needs to developers and technical teams. That requires more than just communication skills. They also need to ask critical questions, dig deeper, and constantly verify whether the solution truly aligns with what's needed. Being able to see the bigger picture without losing sight of the details is what really makes the difference.
